This content was provided by Dr. Rhodes "Dr. J. Richard Rhodes is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who has been in practice for 32 years in Volusia County. He has performed over 5,000 total knee replacement surgeries and over 3,000 total hip replacement surgeries using the latest technology available. He has traveled the world to study medicine in many locations including England, Mexico, Switzerland and China. Dr. Rhodes was born in Brooklyn, New York and was raised in Teaneck, New Jersey. His desire to become a physician stemmed from being around many admired physicians as a child. Dr. Rhodes completed medical school at Rutgers in Newark, New Jersey. He started his residency at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, then went on to the National Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Hospital in Arlington, Virginia. He finished his training in 1984 at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga. After completing his residency, he and his growing family moved to the Daytona Beach area. In addition to maintaining his own practice in Port Orange, he is on staff at both Halifax Health Medical Center and Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach. Dr. Rhodes is currently the orthopaedic physician liaison between the nurses and physicians in the orthopaedic department of Halifax Health Medical Center. He also served as Chief of Surgery, and Chief of Orthopaedics at Halifax Health for many years. He is the current chairman of the Investigational Review Board Advisory Committee and has been the primary investigator of many medical studies. In addition, he co-authored a chapter on spinal infections for Emedicine an online journal of Medicine. In his spare time, Dr. Rhodes volunteers with many programs that help to better the community. He served as president of Temple Israel and President of the Jewish Federation of Volusia and Flagler Counties. Currently, he holds a seat on the Advisory Committee of the Museum of Arts and Sciences. He also served on the board of the Children's Music Theater and has performed in many local theatrical performances along with his wife and children. He enjoys painting with water colors; many of which are displayed in his Port Orange office. He reviews restaurants for his quarterly column called Food for Thought, published in the Volusia County Medical Society's Magazine "The Stethoscope". Recently, he participated in "Daytona Beach's Dancing with the Stars" and won best male dancer."
