Dr. James M. Weisz received his undergraduate degree Summa Cum Laude from Harvard College where he was also named a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society and a Harvard National Scholar. He then attended the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons graduating as a member of the prestigious medical honors society Alpha Omega Alpha and receiving both the Sandoz award and the Edith and Denton McKane memorial award for outstanding scholarship and research. He then continued his medical training in Ophthalmology at the Jules Stein Eye Institute of the University of California at Los Angeles. This was followed by fellowship training in uveitis also at the Jules Stein Eye Institute for which Dr. Weisz was supported by a Heed Foundation Fellowship. Then Dr. Weisz completed specialty training in medical and surgical retinal diseases at the Wilmer Eye Institute of the Johns Hopkins Medical School; this time supported by a Heed/Knapp foundation fellowship.
