Dr. James Perry, DO
When asked why he chose such a complicated and challenging profession, Dr. Perry stated, "It's not a question of having the courage to become a spine surgeon. When you are well-trained and proficient, it's just a matter of being honest with your patients about the risks and rewards." Dr. Perry clearly took his training very seriously. He earned the prestigious Bob Green Award for obtaining the highest score in the nation on the orthopedic certification examination after completing his orthopedic surgery residency at York Memorial in Pennsylvania. He was voted most valuable resident and served as Chief Resident during his tenure. Following his residency, Dr. Perry completed his Spine Surgery Fellowship at the University of Colorado. It was there he trained in minimally-invasive techniques that spare muscle tissue and decrease recovery times for spine patients. "Over the past 20 years, there have been so many advancements with the technology used during spine procedures. Whether it's through the use of minimally-invasive techniques or a more traditional approach, the tools we are using have improved dramatically, allowing us to approach the spine with more accuracy and precision than ever." Dr. Perry says a torn meniscus from a high school wrestling injury was what originally attracted him to orthopedic care. While the injury made it difficult to compete in the State Championships, he bounced back from surgery and was able to thrive in Division I college wrestling. Making this kind of difference in someone's life is what inspires Dr. Perry today. "When you see someone go from being wheelchair bound to walking with a cane, you know you've done something good." As a self-described people person, Dr. Perry emphasizes treating the whole person, not just the condition. "I want a good relationship with my patients and an open line of communication that allows us to have an honest conversation about treatment options as they relate to their individual needs. Non-operative treatments are almost always an option." Dr. Perry is impressed with the recent advancements in implant technology and with continuous improvements in the navigation and accuracy of surgical spine techniques. The challenge with innovative spine techniques is that doctor and patient must agree to share the risk when there is no data to support what the patient's quality of life will be like 10 years from now. "These are very intimate decisions that require absolute trust between doctor and patient." Dr. Perry, along with his wife and son are looking forward to becoming part of the Jacksonville community. The high school sweethearts grew up in the same small town, just two blocks apart. While there were opportunities back in Pennsylvania, Dr. Perry was impressed with JOI and Baptist Medical Center and looks forward to serving the community.

Dr. Perry's Care Philosophy

I believe in treating my patients as I would want a member of my family to be treated. For many conditions a conservative option exists. These options should be considered and attempted prior to invasive surgical procedures. A thorough and honest discussion about the risks, benefits and expectations with surgery should always be offered. These days our diagnostic capabilities are much better as well as our understanding about the spine and it's ailments. Recent advancements in surgical tools and techniques have made spinal surgery a safe and effective option for those suffering from painful conditions. The right operation for the right problem often has favorable outcomes.
