Great the one time I saw him!
Sad he couldn't be my primary psychiatry provider for my ADHD, but I understand why! OHSU policy is to do once-yearly med checks and give prescribing advice to your PCP rather than provide services directly. Hancey was my once-yearly assigned doctor, I admit I was super skeptical because he looks like the stereotypical older-than-dirt guy who isn't going to listen to anything you say and will tell you some inane thing like "ADHD doesn't really exist," but instead I had a great conversation with him! I asked if he needed my 'crazy papers,' all of my ADHD and anxiety psych testing results, and he said "oh no I absolutely believe you have ADHD and that it's poorly controlled." I guess that might sound terrible but as a person who has had to fight providers before over the existence of ADHD, it was a huge relief. And when my PCP ultimately no longer felt comfortable adjusting my psychiatric medication doses, he's the one I contacted for help getting a provider at Psychiatry.

Dr Hancey has been the best Psychiatrist for my issues since he was referred to me over 20-years ago. He listens carefully as well as being up to date with the medications that are now available.

I felt like I was treated well, and rediagnosed with a more true diagnosis than before. I’ve seen many different doctors over the years and have always been over medicated. This doctor is actually working to get me off medications that are not right for me. He’s honest, and he knows his stuff!

Dr. Hancey did not get my name right once. He was brash and unprofessional. He wasted my time. I will not go into the details of the situation, but suffice it to say I have been in the psychiatric system all my life and I had a singularly poor experience with Dr. Hancey.

Dr Hancey is awesome & saved my life. A different Dr had changed my diagnosis & extremely overmedicated me. After one appt with Dr Hancey he confirmed my original diagnosis & arranged for care to detox off incorrect meds. Then his office helped with insurance to be a weekly patient in his clinic. My life became much better/healthier for several years. Then insurance changed & denied his clinic. My life has slowly declined ever since. Its unfortunate there are not more Drs like Dr Hancey.

Dr Hancey diagnosed my adult child with mod to severe ADHD and OCD. He spent a total of 45 min with my child and then left them with a free month of meds. Asked nothing but leading questions. Follow up was not ever with him but his practitioner. As a health care worker myself, I am shocked at this. I would not recommend him to anyone.

Dr. Hancey is not the most attentive psychiatrist out there. He insisted that I stay on the highest dose of a certain SNRI, even though it was causing insane side effects (such as extreme hypersomnia-- I couldn't wake up even after setting a light alarm, a buzzer alarm, and a normal alarm) and was not helping my depression whatsoever. The only suggestions he had were to take it in the morning or to take it in the evening. He also did not help me taper off of the benzodiazepines he prescribed.

I was in real trouble and called him because the medication he prescribed was really causing me troible and he told me I was calling too often. What a horrible response from a professional when I was having a major drug reaction. I certainly would not recommend him.
