Care Philosophy

As a neurosurgeon who cares for both brain and spinal problems, I feel that I have a unique perspective on many neurosurgical issues. Importantly, my experience with microsurgery of delicate vascular lesions both informs and enhances my ability to deal delicately and dexterously with the spinal cord and spinal nerves. I am also one of the few neurosurgeons in the country to have completed an orthopedic spinal surgery fellowship, so that I can bring a "best of both worlds" approach to spine care.Read more

Dr. Dorward Says:

As a disclaimer, I will say that my clinic does not always run on time. I see patients from several different states in the region, and many have extremely complex problems that require a long period of focused attention. I would rather run behind in my clinic than give a patient less time than he/she deserves in the assessment and planning related to their spinal condition.

in St Charles, Mo |
I was referred to Dr Dorward by my neurosurgeon, as I have a very complex back condition. I left numerous messages with Dawn (med assistant) none were returned. I finally went to office to talk to someone, and the office manager Rhonda, has been most helpful. Since my 1st surgery in April was cancelled 4 days prior, due to Ins refusing to pay for the BMP . The precert dept submitted the claim wrong. I'm still dealing with appeals. I have BEGGED to talk to Dr before my major surgery, and can't
I am very sorry for the difficulties you encountered in reaching me. That problem is highly abnormal for our team, as we strive to be responsive and helpful. Unfortunately, due to the extensive nature of many of the cases I perform, insurance companies sometimes present barriers. We try to provide maximal assistance in this regard, but in this case we seem to have failed, and for that I am sorry. Hopefully you are now happy with your surgical outcome and subsequent interactions with my team.

One particular area of my focus is the treatment of cervical spinal deformities. I am amazed at how many patients with severe neck deformities ("chin on chest" or "chin on shoulder" deformity, dropped head syndrome, cervical kyphosis) have been told that "there is nothing anyone can do for you." Cervical deformities cause tremendous suffering and loss of quality of life, but they are highly correctible with spinal reconstructive surgery.
