Given a diagnosis of ET in a 5 minute meeting with almost no information. Told new meds in the development pipeline will be ready in a couple years, comeback in 6 months. That's it, all the information for a diagnosis of blood cancer. Call back to nurse with follow up questions, get a couple of answers including a change of diagnosis to PV (which is worse!) and told if I had more questions I could schedule another appointment ($50 copay). Doctor didn't offer to call me, didn't care.

My treatment with Dr. Ryan was based on her 10 years of experience and not on evidence based medical research from a consensus of experts in the treatment of polycythemia vera. Dr. Ryan wrongly told me phlebotomy would not work for me and I needed too start chemotherapy. I sought a second and a third opinion, including Dana Farber in Boston, who as tactfully as they could say it, disagreed with Dr. Ryan's recommendation of chemotherapy for me. Now doing well with phlebotonomy no chemotherapy.
Although I agree that phlebotomy should have been continued in your case, the guidelines recommend starting chemotherapy in addition to phlebotomy once patients reach age 60.
