This content was provided by Dr. Bittner "Gulf Coast Cardiothoracic Surgery Institute was formed by Hartmuth Bittner, MD, PhD, FACS, after serving as Chief of Advanced Cardiac Surgery and Chief of Heart and Lung Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support at the Florida Hospital transplant programs and Cardiovascular Institute in Orlando, Florida. Prior to his appointment with Florida Hospital, Dr. Bittner headed up the transplant team from the Heart Center Leipzig and the University of Leipzig in Germany, where he served as professor of surgery and was the endowed chair of clinical and experimental thoracic organ transplantation. He specializes in minimally invasive cardiac surgery using beating-heart technology, catheter-based valve interventions (TAVR), heart failure treatment and surgery, surgical treatment of structural heart, vascular and cardiopulmonary end-stage cardiopulmonary diseases, mechanical circulatory assist devices, and heart and lung transplantation. Dr. Bittner received his first academic degree from the National Academy of Sports, Sports Science and Sports Medicine in Cologne, Germany, and his medical degree from the University of Heidelberg Medical School in Heidelberg, Germany. He then attended multiple invitations to Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts, as a visiting lecturer teaching anatomy. Afterwards he completed his internship in cardiothoracic surgery at the German Heart Institute in Berlin. He completed his residency training and fellowship in general and cardiothoracic surgery and transplantation at Duke University Medical Center, in Durham, North Carolina. Dr. Bittner served as Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Minnesota in the division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgery. He has published extensively as primary and secondary author in more than 150 peer-reviewed journals."
