Dr. Aryafar's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Aryafar "Hamed Aryafar, MD, is a board-certified diagnostic radiologist and vascular and interventional radiologist. He specializes in treating pediatric and adult vascular malformations, including arteriovenous malformations, venous malformations, venolymphatic malformations, Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome and other vascular lesions. Dr. Aryafar has expertise in several interventional radiology procedures that are not routinely performed at most hospitals. These procedures offer patients with various types of liver and gastrointentinal bleeding options for care, and include: Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) that uses intravascular ultrasound guidance to connect the portal vein to the hepatic vein. The procedure can reduce internal bleeding and accumulation of fluid in the abdomen and chest in patients with liver disease such as cirrhosis. Direct portal systemic shunt placements (DIPS) for individuals who are not candidates for TIPS. Antegrade transvenous obliteration of gastroesophageal varices, a minimally invasive approach to treat certain types of gastric bleeding. Plug-assisted transvenous obliteration of gastric varices, a technique for treating severe complications of portal hypertension, a leading cause of death in patients with cirrhosis. An associate professor and vice chair of Radiology Informatics in the Department of Radiology at UC San Diego School of Medicine, his research explores portal hypertension, vascular malformations and medical informatics as a tool for improving patient care. Dr. Aryafar completed a fellowship in interventional radiology and a residency in diagnostic radiology at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He earned his medical degree from Chicago Medical School. He is board-certified in diagnostic radiology and vascular and interventional radiology. In his spare time, Dr. Aryfar enjoys traveling and running."
