Dr. Buckberg's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Buckberg "Dr. Gerald D. Buckberg is a Distinguished Professor of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He interned at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, did his residency training at Hopkins and UCLA, received his Cardiothoracic training at UCLA School of Medicine, and had research training at the Cardiovascular Institute at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Buckberg is a member of multiple surgical societies, including the American Association of Thoracic Surgery, American Surgical Association, and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Dr. Buckberg's research interests have centered in the area of myocardial protection and have led to the introduction of blood cardioplegia, which is currently used by 85% of the surgeons in the United States and 70% of surgeons worldwide for adult and pediatric heart operations. He has also developed techniques to simply, safely, and rapidly deliver cardioplegia solutions to allow their distribution to all segments of the heart and ensure their protective effects. Over 20,000,000 patients have received blood cardioplegia treatment since he introduced it. Investigative studies by his team have led to a new approach to treatment of acute myocardial infarction that restores healthy function and avoids development of congestive heart failure that often follows heart attacks. These specialized techniques save and restore early function to heart muscle in patients suffering heart attacks after time intervals previously thought to cause irreversible damage (i.e., more than 6 hours). Further innovative studies by Dr. Buckberg's teams have achieved additional breakthroughs in treating sudden death syndrome, treating acute myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, avoiding heart muscle damage in blue babies by limiting how much oxygen is delivered, correcting diastolic dysfunction, remedying disorders relating to the septum, and improving pacemaker effectiveness. He formed an international medical/surgical team representing the U.S., Europe, Asia, and South America to treat congestive heart failure in dilated hearts. This team restored heart shape in 1200 patients, and after 5-year follow up, resulted in over 70% survival without detrimental symptoms of heart failure. These findings differ dramatically from the over 50% deaths that occur after just 2 years when patients receive only traditional medical treatment. Dr. Buckberg received the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Scientific Achievement Award in May 2007, the highest award the Association bestows to honor an individual for scientific achievements in thoracic surgery. Dr. Buckberg was recognized for his seminal contributions in the field of myocardial preservation and elucidating the anatomy and pathophysiology of heart failure."
