This content was provided by Dr. Simonds "Dr. Simonds was a biochemistry major at Dartmouth College. He went on to UMDNJ Rutgers Medical School as a recipient of an Army Scholarship where he was first in his class and was inducted into the AOA National Medical Honor Society. During medical school, he married his wife, Cindy, an occupational therapist. He enrolled in a 7 year neurosurgery residency program at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. During this time he also trained at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Dr. Simonds practiced as an active duty Army neurosurgeon. He was active in the training of neurosurgical residents and medical students as an assistant professor of surgery at the USUHS. During his military tenure he was awarded for excellence in research and medical care. In 1995 he joined the neurosurgery service at Geisinger Medical Clinic and Janet Weiss Children's Hospital. In 2003 Dr. Simonds resettled in Roanoke. With former Geisinger partner Dr. Zev Elias, he initiated Carilion Clinic Neurosurgery, a full service neurosurgical team. As chief, he has created a 9 surgeon, 9 physician assistant department to provide around the clock neurosurgical coverage to the region and developed a residency neurosurgery program. Regularly, he gives talks and lectures to local medical personnel, community organizations, and students at VTCSOM, VCOM, and JCHS. He is active in national neurosurgical organizations. He is now collaborating with researchers from VTCRI and Virginia Tech College of Neurosciences to help advance care of neurological diseases. Known as a caring and down-to-earth physician, Dr. Simonds carries tremendous neurosurgical expertise. He has performed more than 12,000 procedures. There are very few neurosurgeons in the country who share this depth of surgical experience including pediatric neurosurgery, brain and spinal cord tumor surgery, and epilepsy surgery. He has vast experience in treating degenerative spine disease, spinal fractures, head injuries, and chronic pain. Dr. Simonds has special interest in physician mental wellness. He has collaborated with renown expert Dr. Wayne Sotile to create a wellness and resiliency program at Carilion and to publish a book on the subject. They are working on a second book for all medical training. Dr. Simonds recently received a Masters degree in Healthcare Delivery Science at Dartmouth College to help improve healthcare in Southwest Virginia."
