This content was provided by Dr. Szabo "Originally from Romania, Dr. Gabriela Szabo always seemed to have an interest in endocrinology. She finds the process of being an endocrinologist fascinating. "Endocrinolgy is very close to mathematics," she explains. "It is also very logic-based, and in many ways you are like a detective working on a mystery when you are uncovering a problem." In her endocrinology practice at Reliant Medical Group, Dr. Szabo provides treatment for patients with diabetes, thyroid and other endocrine gland problems. "I have a special interest in treating overactive and underactive thyroid gland disorders, Cushing's syndrome, pituitary diseases, and other endocrine problems. I also perform thyroid nodule biopsies, right here, in the endocrinology office." When providing care for a diabetes patient, Dr. Szabo works hard to make sure they understand the seriousness of the disease. "With diabetes, I always tell patients that even though the disease doesn't hurt, it will create complications without proper treatment. These can include eye and kidney problems and nerve damage because diabetes really affects the whole body. Patients with diabetes are also at increased risk for cardiovascular diseases, like heart attacks and strokes. It is important not to treat just the diabetes, but treat all factors that could affect the patient's risk for complications." In treating her patients, Dr. Szabo enjoys working with the latest diagnostic technology, including ultrasounds. "We can carefully look at the ultrasound image of a patient's nodules and then biopsy the ones that look higher risk. It's a much better way to find and treat high risk thyroid nodules, rather than just feeling the neck with our bare hands, which is what doctors used to do in the past." Dr. Szabo says that one of her biggest challenges is to convince patients about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, and to make them more motivated to change – to be more proactive. "For my diabetic patients, achieving a healthier lifestyle and diet is very important. The patient is responsible for their own health, and the doctor can make recommendations for changes, or new medications, but it's up to the patient to really do what's best to improve his or her own health." When she is not busy with her patients, Dr. Szabo enjoys spending time with her family. She also enjoys traveling (especially back to Europe), reading and listening to music, as well as outdoor activities, such as hiking and skiing."
