Dr. Mess diagnosed me with a dislocated kneecap and after months of still being in pain, told me that was just how it was going to be - my knee would always hurt. I begged for a MRI & went to a different Doctor, who told me that I never dislocated my knee and instead had cartilage damage. Not only was he dismissive, but his office is unorganized. I once was left in the waiting room for an hour and a half only to be found when they were closing because they forgot I was there.

After having surgery performed by Dr. Mess for a broken femur, I spent weeks in extreme pain and my leg was no longer straight. When I asked him about this at a follow up session, he told me that was normal and to just wear a long dress. I immediately switched doctors and within the first two minutes of the new orthopedic surgeon seeing me, was told I needed the entire surgery again. I had acute nerve damage, two hairline fractures no one had previously diagnosed, and screws coming undone.

This guy is a joke. He was dismissive and condescending. He told me there is nothing wrong with me (despite the fact that I am an consistent knee pain everyday all day at 25 years old). Then proceeded to tell me that anyone would kill for legs like mine. He refused to recommend any testing/X-rays/MRIs. I asked a nurse to look at my knees afterward and she immediately saw the swelling above my knees and the deformation of my left knee compared to my right. I will be filing a complaint.

Was rude, belittling and unconcerned for my well being. My leg is now twice as swollen from his rough handling and all he told me was that I should work through the pain and come back and see him again in three weeks. $300 for ten minutes of his time. This poor experience literally sent me home crying.

Even specialists specialize. One orthopedic surgeon might do nothing but hip surgeries, while another does nothing but knees. If you want the best possible care, it’s critical to match your medical need with the doctor who truly specializes in treating it.
