He graduated from Yale University and attended the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, where he earned his medical degree. He completed a five year general surgery residency at the University of Connecticut and a two year cardiothoracic surgery residency at the University of California, San Francisco. He remained at the University of California, San Francisco to complete an additional two year fellowship in pediatric and congential cardiac surgery. Dr. Mello specializes in all aspects of congenital cardiac surgery and is an educator in the field.   Dr. Mello is board certified in general surgery, adult cardiothoracic surgery and congenital cardiac surgery and has over 20 years' experience in cardiac surgery."
