Deepika Malik, MD, Chairman of Retina Services at the Laurel Eye Clinic, is a fellowship trained Vitreoretinal Specialist with over 10 years of medical and surgical retina experience. She is a leader in diagnosing and treating patients with retinal disorders. Dr. Malik has completed her surgical fellowship in vitreous and retina diseases at Gavin Herbert Eye institute, University of California, Irvine. She has completed externships at Truhlsen Eye Institute, University of Nebraska Medical Center and Midwest Eye Care in Omaha, Nebraska. While at the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, University of California, Irvine, Dr. Malik was a Clinical Instructor for the Vitreous and Retina Surgical Fellowship Program. The goals of this program were to further develop up-to-date surgical techniques and she served as a mentor for the American surgical fellows.Dr. Malik is a member of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, the Jefferson County Medical Society, American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), Pennsylvania Medical Society, American Medical Association (AMA), the Vitreo-retina Society of India (VRSI), and the All-India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS). Dr. Malik has participated in multicenter national clinical trials evaluating new drugs and devices for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusions and age-related macular degeneration. Her primary area of research is the role of mitochondrial genetics in the pathogenesis of retinal conditions, such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. She has also extensively researched on safety profiles of anti-VEGF drugs that are available for use in the treatment of age-related macular degeneration. Her research work has been published in internationally recognized journals - British Journal of Ophthalmology, PLOS One and Human Molecular Genetics. Dr. Malik is honored to have participated in surgical mission work in India. She has previously served in collaboration with various organizations - Samvedana eye care project, for diabetes, World Diabetes Foundation, ORBIS, Vision 2020, and National Programme for Control of Blindness. She has provided cataract and retinal surgical services to patients in underserved communities. Dr. Malik is accepting appointments in our Brookville, DuBois, Grove City and Duncansville locations. She is performing retina surgeries in our Brookville and Altoona Surgery Centers.
