Care Philosophy

My philosophy in treating and caring for patients with breast problems is to address all aspects of their care including education, physical aspects, and emotional psychological needs.  It is my role to inform patients about their treatment options, and to help guide them in the decision making process, in which they participate as an essential part of the overall plan.  I support an individual's decision once they are aware of the benefits and risks of that decision.  Each recommendation is based on individual needs, and listening to patients helps in determining those needs.  Communication in clear language is given rather than speaking only in medical terminology (i.e. medical jargon).  Expedited care is given in order to reduce overall anxiety and potentially improve patient outcomes.  I treat every patient as I would want to be treated, in a respectful manner with dignity and compassion.

Surgical fellowship training includes Breast Surgical Oncology at one of the premiere leading Cancer Centers in the country, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, in New York City. This training started my career with the foundation necessary to deliver the best patient care available. Academic training as well as precise surgical skills are essential in achieving the best possible outcomes for all patients with breast cancer and benign breast conditions.  Over the past 22 years, my primary focus has been exclusively to helping patients with breast related health problems, now totaling over ten thousand. My experience as a breast surgeon has taught me that judgement is an essential attribute, as is surgical expertise in order to perform best practice in this specialty. Board certification by the American Board of Surgery requires maintaining up-to-date knowledge contributing to being an expert in this field.

Dr. Ruark says...

Surgical expertise is frequently inherent in a surgeon due natural ability combined with technical skill.  Surgical residency consists of 5 years of dedicated training in the operating room, and in my individual situation an additional 3 years of surgical oncology fellowship training. The personal characteristics of perfectionism, attention to detail, and extreme thoroughness are all contribute to my uniqueness and expertise in Breast Surgery.
