Superior Oblique Myokymia
Dr. Cestari at Mass Eye and Ear was amazing! He and his team were able to correctly diagnose a very rare disease i have. It is called Superior Oblique Myokymia. Not much is known about it and effective treatment procedures are all but non existent. I did not respond well to drug therapy so with very cautious optimism, we decided to opt for surgery. The surgery he chose was custom but was similar to a strabismus procedure i believe. He put me at ease for the surgery and a few months later I can report a MAJOR improvement in my symptoms. I can drive and work again! I recommend Dr. Cestari with the highest praise!

A+++ from start to finish!
I had strabismus surgery in early August and Dr. Dean Cestari and his staff were beyond wonderful. I felt like a whole person, not just a patient, from my first consultation through the surgery. Before the procedure, I was incredibly nervous and uncertain about whether to move forward and he patiently answered my MANY questions with apparent care and compassion. Despite a terrible experience with anesthesia about 20 years ago, this surgery was a great experience. I had no nausea or dizziness coming out of the operation and the staff helped me feel safe and relaxed. To add the cherry, the procedure worked and my eye is now straight! I feel so much more confident facing the screen in Zoom meetings and talking to people in-person. I'm so glad I had the surgery and I definitely recommend Dr. Cestari for anyone who is considering the procedure!!!

‘The Miracle Worker”
Dr. Cestari successfully performed surgery on my eyes to correct my diplopia and strabismus. He is very knowledgeable and was able to explain to me in lay terms the what and why of my symptoms. He is a very caring, considerate practitioner who is very determined to achieve a positive outcome. I just can’t say thank-you often enough! I would send any member of family to him knowing they would be in the best hands possible. I am so grateful!

Double visions
As soon as he found out this was a work related injury he said “if you are suing I can’t be a part of that” which is utterly ignorant there is no “suing” involved in my case. From that moment on he talked over me, was very dismissive, did less tests than the local eye doctor down the street, and concluded that perhaps my double vision is because I am getting old (33 years) and not from getting whacked across the eye with a metal object …… which was when the issue started!!! He also refused to acknowledge blunt force trauma to my left eye and further said “perhaps you had double vision before the injury and you just didn’t realize it until after”……. Wow!

Dr. Cestari recently performed a Strabismus surgery, and the outcome was far better than I'd imagined. I am a complex case, having a detached retina that required four surgeries and an miraculous but still imperfect outcome given the damage. One significant drawback from those procedures was double-vision that skewed toward different plains of vision. Dr. Cestari and his excellent team corrected the multi-plain challenge and brought the double-vision down to barely noticeable levels, which is extraordinary--I'm using both eyes to see for the first time in 3 years. But what was so gratifying was the time and empathy Dr Cestari demonstrated as we went through 5-6 different ways to approach my case. He was very accommodating that I was reluctant to have surgery on my "good eye", even though the risks were quite remote. He was always looking for potential solutions rather than being dogmatic about the "one correct way." I highly recommend him, and the entire team at MEEI.

I have been working with Dr. Cestari for over a year for double vision. We tried the conservative route for a year, which was my decision, and opted for prisms to start. Then after a year of using the glasses, we elected to try the corrective surgery. Dr. Cestari and his team were thoughtful and detailed on the procedure as well as the recovery. He walked me through the whole procedure, prior to the operation date to ensure I was comfortable and understood everything. The day of the procedure as well as the recovery went exactly as planned. I am very pleased with how it all went. Thank you Dr. Cestari and your team at Mass Eye and Ear for your expertise, dedication and support throughout the process. So grateful.

I thought Dr. Cestari was rude and condescending. He left my mother and me feeling like he didn’t care and he didn’t really explain things well. He came in with another dr and didn’t introduce himself or the other dr. My son was with me and he didn’t bother introducing himself. He seemed to be very disinterested and was not helpful at all. I would not recommend him to anyone at all. He was smug and unhelpful. He left me feeling very sad and upset.

I have had double vision due to MS for over 15 years. Dr. Cestari told me how my right eye was 0.5mm lower than my left. He gave me the choice of prisms (which I rejected since I am a contact lens wearer) or surgery. I went for the surgery and am happy to report I can now watch TV without having to adjust my direction of gaze often. I can now read a book more easily. Thank you Dr. Cestari!

I recently had Dr. Dean Cestari perform strabismus surgery after a severe case of thyroid eye disease causing double vision and several other issues since 2014. I am extremely pleased and amazed with the results and the range of single vision he was able to get back after performing the surgery. With surgeons like Dr. Cestari, I am not surprised that the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary rates among the best in the business. Thanks Dr. Cestari for an outstanding result!

I felt welcomed and comfortable at every visit to Dr. Cestari's office. He explained I had adult strabismus. Dr.. Cestari explained how he could repair the problem and what the prognosis would be with or without surgery. He gave me plenty of time to ask questions and he took time to explain everything about the upcoming surgery. H operated on both eyes. The recovery and results are as Dr. Cestari explained to me. I am very satisfied with my whole experience with Dr. Centari and everyone in his office. I now have clear vision.
