Physiatry is rewarding because the focus is on restoring function. It's more than shooting for good test results; we get to help people play with their grandkids or go for a walk. These are the things that are really meaningful to someone's everyday life; and thus very rewarding for me. While I work most frequently with patients who are suffering from pain in their spine or joints, I do treat pain and dysfunction in other parts of the body as well. Pain can be a complex, complicated puzzle and often is referred from remote areas that one would think to be unrelated to their perceived region of pain. I believe treatment should proceed from an initial conservative approach to more aggressive approach in a graduated fashion. Treatments include physical therapy, medications, interventional injections of steroids or more aggressive treatments of nerve ablations or spinal cord stimulation. A team approach is often used by working with other providers to obtain the best results possible.
