This content was provided by Dr. Gehling "Northwest Ohio is a great place to raise a family. Originally from Wisconsin, my wife and I relocated to Toledo in 2003 and 2004. After finishing training, we moved to Northern California, but shortly after that commitment was finished, we moved back to Toledo."
This content was provided by Dr. Gehling "My current focus is minimally invasive and muscle sparing techniques in hip and knee replacement. In the earlier aspects of my career, I did standard knee and hip replacements, but there are some disadvantages to those approaches. In particular, I noticed that return to work 6-8 weeks in most cases.
As more people elect for hip and knee replacements, I felt that there had to be a better way, especially to get people back to work and activity sooner. I now feel that muscle sparing techniques are superior in many cases, and afford people the possibility to return to activity sooner.
For hip osteoarthritis, I now do a majority of hip replacements through an anterior supine intermuscular approach, which allows me to do a hip replacement without cutting muscles. For knee replacement, some patients are candidates for partial, ligament sparing knee replacement. Otherwise, total knee replacement is is the best option, and can sometimes be done with a muscle sparing approach as well."
