Hawaii Vision Specialists is a dynamic practice combining a hybrid of highly qualified optometric and ophthalmic eye care. There is a large need for specialists on the Big Island and Maui, and we feel our ability to service this region is long overdue. Patients no longer need to journey to Oahu for routine or specialty eye care. We provide similar services as practitioners in metropolitan regions of the United States in the friendly confines of the outer islands. Our extensive training and experience in providing high quality medical and surgical ophthalmic services allows us to serve the residents of the island with eye care that is second to none.
Dan Driscoll, originally from rural Ohio, completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida between July 2007 and July 2010. During this period of time, he was responsible for the ophthalmic care of hundreds of Miami's indigenous patients from day one of training to the day he graduated. This "cradle to the grave" model of eyecare enabled him to practice providing each aspect of ophthalmic care from the simple provision of prescriptions for glasses to complex ophthalmic surgery for his patients over the three year period.
Subsequent to graduating from residency in June 2010, Dr. Driscoll continued an additional year at Bascom Palmer as a specialty training fellow in cornea, cataract, and refractive surgery; this optional year enabled him to specialize in highly intricate surgery not commonly performed by general ophthalmologists. During this year, he also had a supervisory role in resident surgery as well as performing independent, attending-physician level consults and surgery at the University of Miami Hospital.
Dr. Driscoll carried his training into private practice in northern Florida/southern Georgia after his fellowship concluded. In this region, as an attending physician he provided cornea and refractive services for patients that would otherwise be relegated to finding care in Jacksonville, Florida or Savannah, Georgia as the next nearest specialty centers. Dr. Driscoll was consulted by greater than fifty other eye care providers on a routine basis as the only specialist of his training within a 200 mile radius.
Following his time in the Florida/Georgia region, Dr. Driscoll ventured to Hawaii with Dr. Souza with the goal of bringing the same specialty care to the underserved patient population of the Big Island, as there were no full time cornea specialists operating on the Island, necessitating patients to seek care by flying to Oahu. Dr. Driscoll has successfully been credentialed at each operating facility on the Big Island and is gradually introducing each new procedure in his surgical repertoire to the staff at these facilities, while maintaining a high standard of general ophthalmic clinical and surgical care. It is Dr. Driscoll's goal to be a tertiary referral source from other practices both on the Big Island and other islands of Hawaii to further serve the great people of this state.
