Dr. Donovan's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Donovan "Daniel J. Donovan, MD, FACC, has been an interventional cardiologist with Cardiology Clinic of San Antonio since 2003. He starts each day energized to get to work, whether it is to open an artery during an emergent heart attack, or to sit in his hypertension clinic discussing lifestyle recommendations that will lead to patients living better and longer. Dr. Donovan has a Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. He received a Doctorate of Optometry at New England College of Optometry in Boston, Massachusetts, and then served as Chief of Optometry at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas. He received his medical degree at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Donovan completed his residency, earning the title of Chief Resident, and his fellowship in Cardiology at Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas. He completed his fellowship in interventional cardiology at University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. After completing his interventional cardiology fellowship, he returned to Wilford Hall and assumed various roles to include Director of Cardiovascular Research, Director of Peripheral Intervention, Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and, eventually, Chief of Cardiology. In 2002, he briefly moved back to private practice in Worcester, Massachusetts, before returning to San Antonio to join Cardiology Clinic of San Antonio. His academic appointments have included Assistant Professor of Medicine University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Dr. Donovan was also the Program Director of the Transitional Residency Program at Wilford Hall. Dr. Donovan performs transradial heart caths where coronary arteries are examined and treated through the radial artery in the wrist, instead of the femoral artery in the groin. It's more comfortable in patients who are candidates for this approach, and the risk of bleeding and vascular complications are reduced in the transradial approach. Dr. Donovan's expertise also includes structural heart disease. He performs transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVRs) both transfemoral and transapical TAVR procedures at the South Texas Valve Center, a department of Methodist Hospital."

Dr. Donovan is a dedicated, thorough and kind physician. I was referred to him by a back surgeon about 5 years ago. After one visit I felt like we had known each other for years. He subsequently performed a heart cath. and stint for me and I never had a worry. I knew that I was in great hands. ...more
