I have been practicing medicine for the past 30-plus years and continue to enjoy the challenges it brings. As corny as it may seem I was inspired to practice medicine and more specifically primary care by TV's wise and experienced Marcus Welby MD. On that 1970s show both that character and ultra-cool young Dr. Steven Kiley were caring compassionate physicians. And Dr. Welby was a crackerjack diagnostician. As a young boy it seemed that nothing could be more interesting than the intellectual challenges of medicine while helping people. In 1985 I started practicing medicine in a Hillsborough practice that later became the first Duke Primary Care practice in 1994. I am very proud of the fact that I was involved in the start-up of Duke Primary Care which has provided outstanding health care to so many.
