Dr. Courtney Cowden joined Hays County Sports Medicine in 2013 offering the latest in orthopaedic care for sports injuries, arthroscopy, degenerative joint disease, and fracture care of all ages. Native Texans, Dr. Cowden and his wife Susan were born and raised in Midland, Texas, and are proud to call the Texas Hill Country their home. Dr. Cowden began his education at Texas Tech University where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering graduating Suma Cum Laude and the highest ranking engineering graduate in 2002. He followed his undergraduate degree with a Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2003, having completed his thesis describing the relationship of female sex hormones to the strength of the ACL. Dr. Cowden went on to study medicine at the prestigious UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas for four years prior to moving to Kansas City, Missouri where he spent five years completing his orthopaedic surgery residency through the University of Missouri at Kansas City. Dr. Cowden further specialized with a fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine under the guidance of the renowned sports surgeons Dr. Alan Barber and Dr. Alex Glogau in Plano, Texas. Throughout his education and practice, Dr. Cowden has been recognized on multiple occasions. He was given special recognition as an outstanding tutor of fellow classmates upon graduation from medical school and further recognized as an outstanding consultant by the Truman Medical Center Emergency Department in 2010. He is a member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, The Texas Medical Society, and the Texas Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Cowden has participated in the care of athletes from multiple professional and division I collegiate programs including the Texas Legends, an affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks. Throughout his training, Dr. Cowden has authored or co-authored multiple published articles concerning the science of orthopaedics and sports medicine as well as mechanical engineering and biomechanics. His topics of published research range from the mechanical properties of the female ACL and 3D imaging of ACLs to meniscal cyst pathomechanics and treatment to novel surgical techniques in sports medicine. Dr. Cowden's wife, Susan, is a licensed marriage and family therapist specializing in the treatment of eating disorders and is a freelance writer. Together, they and their family are active in their church and the surrounding community.
