Dr. Haines' bio

This content was provided by Dr. Haines "Dr. Haines joins the nationally-recognized team of spinal specialists at Virginia Spine Institute to expand practice capacity and strengthen expertise in the most advanced spinal treatment options. His background, reinforced by his clinical experience and treatment philosophy, positions him to provide progressive non-operative and operative treatment solutions to get patients back to a pain-free lifestyle more quickly. He works collaboratively with our pain management specialists and physical therapists to provide the most comprehensive treatment plans and improved post-operative rehabilitation pathways. His interest in medicine began at a young age and was solidified when he suffered a lumbar disc herniation in high school. After undergoing successful non-operative treatment, he was back on his feet and profoundly impacted by the process of healing! This experience fueled his ambition to become a physician and helped inspire his empathy for spinal conditions. During the initial patient consultation, Dr. Haines intently listens and learns the in-depth history of a patient's pain and impairment as well as their goals for recovery. This information, paired with a detailed physical exam and appropriate imaging studies, allows him to present and explain diagnoses and tailored treatment options. Dr. Haines works collaboratively with the patient to devise the most successful treatment plan to get patients back to a pain-free lifestyle! Dr. Haines is on the forefront of spinal health care through the application of progressive treatment options that provide the most effective results for neck or back pain. Specializing in the management of degenerative cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine conditions as well as complex spinal deformity, he utilizes motion-preserving surgical techniques if possible. Examples are cervical disc replacement and laminoplasty as an alternative to cervical spinal fusions. When spinal fusion is indicated, Dr. Haines utilizes minimally invasive techniques to return patients back to function as quickly as possible. Well versed in various areas of spinal health care, Dr. Haines has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals and authored multiple textbook chapters. In addition, his research has been presented both nationally and internationally. Dr. Haines completed an orthopedic surgery residency at The George Washington University and a combined orthopedic and neurosurgical spine fellowship at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic. His training allows him to approach patients as neither an isolated orthopedic surgeon nor a neurosurgeon but rather an integrated spinal specialist."

Dr. Haines was very caring, listening to my concerns and not jumping to conclusions. He ordered multiple test and to my relief, recommended a conservative approach, rather jumping ahead to a surgical one. Ultimately he was right and was able to relieve my long term back pain without surgery.
