Listening is probably the most important thing when working with a patient. If I don't listen, I won't get an accurate history and that's often the most important thing in accurately diagnosing health concerns. I have had a wide variety of exposure to mental health concerns, both in practice and in my family, so I think I can offer a unique understanding and sympathy for families who are experiencing mental health concerns. Listen well--if you respect others and listen to what they have to say, you can't help but understand their emotion and respond with your own. It is a privilege and honor to be chosen by a family to handle their health concerns. I consider myself to be in the service industry, just like mechanics and hospitality personnel. I am there to help someone, not to dictate or have power. If a family leaves feeling as though I have listened to their concerns, whether they be health related, emotional, spiritual, or financial, and feels comfortable with the evidence-based plan of action to address those concerns, I feel I have provided excellent patient care.Read more
