She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from The University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. She then continued her training at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, completing her residency in Internal Medicine. Dr Smith then completed her Ophthalmology residency program at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. It is notable that Dr. Charlene Smith was the first female chief-of-staff at CHI St. Lukes Health Memorial Hospital. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, as well as, an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Women in Ophthalmology.
