Since I m in adolescent medicine, I have a tendency to ask a lot more questions regarding substance use, tobacco use, sexual intercourse, and other activities like that, where some pediatricians kind of shy away from that. I even give them my card in front of the parents and basically state that, You re an adolescent. You know how to use a phone and you all have cell phones in fact I haven t met an adolescent yet who doesn t have a cell phone and knows more about it than I do in working my cell phone and have them give me a call. If you have questions about your health, medicine that you re taking, any other issues, they can feel free to talk to me about that. You have to be open and nonjudgmental with the adolescent.
