I see both adults and children for a variety of different genetic disorders. When a physician, or primary care physician, has a child that's either not reaching the milestones at the expected time or losing milestones, often times they will refer the patient to genetics. We'll take a detailed family history to see if there's any clues in that. Had that happened to other people in the family? Or there are any other individuals that died? We consider initial genetic testing, which sometimes includes chromosome testing, specialized chromosome testing, such as Microarray. If we can identify a cause, we can then look at other children that have the same disorder. There's two advantages to that. One is anticipatory guidance, specific for that particular abnormality. And the second is hooking up the family with other families that have children with similar disorders.Read more
