Why Does Experience Matter?

Even specialists specialize. One orthopedic surgeon might do nothing but hip surgeries, while another does nothing but knees. If you want the best possible care, it’s critical to match your medical need with the doctor who truly specializes in treating it.

Dr. Hopkins was born and raised in San Diego, California.  He received his undergraduate education at UCLA with a B.S. in Kinesiology-Physiology.  He went to the University of Southern California (USC) for medical school, graduating in 1994.  After medical school he remained at USC for a 1-year surgical internship, followed by 5 years of urologic training at USC, where he received extensive experience in urologic oncology and urinary tract reconstruction using intestinal segments for patients having their bladders removed for bladder cancer.

In addition to his busy clinical schedule, Dr. Hopkins has been active with many leadership positions at the John Muir Medical Centers, including Chief of Urology, Chairman of Surgery, Robotics Steering Committee member/advisor, John Muir Cancer Committee member, and as co-chairman of the Program in Urology since 2010.  Dr. Hopkins is a member of the American Urologic Association, the American Urogynecologic Society, the American Association of Clinical Urologists, the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, the California Medical Association, and the Alameda-Contra Costa County Medical Association.
