A prodigy and amazing person/doctor!
I’m a 54 year old male and I was born with congenital neutropenia (inability to create neutrophils to fight bacteria). I moved to Austin in 1995 and worked with Dr Costanzi. Upon his retirement, he introduced to Dr Benjamin Downie. When I met this young, bright eyed, southern gentleman, I literally thought I had met the prodigious TV acclaimed’Dr. Doogie Howser!” How in the world could someone this youthful looking know how to navigate the impossible landscape of cancer? I soon found out. Having been hospitalized some 30 times at that point, I had never met a ‘white coat,’as I affectionately call them, who took such focused interest in my history, my situation and my future. He was genuinely interested in helping me understand how I could find success while dealing with such a nefarious disease. That was Circa 2003ish. And now some 20 years later Dr Downie is still as focused and honestly curious about my care, as he was the day I met him. He is gem of a person and physician!

This doctor bleeds for his patients...
No matter where I live, I average 15-20 specialists. I have never met a more compassionate, devoted, empathetic doctor. I have worked with top notch docs but never have I seen someone who never sits down and runs down the hall with his hair on fire greeting everyone he sees with a hi there! Mr. or Mrs..whatever. This is a tough profession that demands absolute attention to detail and an incredible memory. He can read through and memorize a medical file in 5 minutes and never forget a word...I don't care how thick it is. Just amazing. I really don't know how he can possibly be so happy all the time and do such exhausting work...but he is and he does. Everything he is doing or going to do is explained in such loving detail. I am convinced he is some kind of angel...you just don't see Docs like this anymore. Everyone just loves him. After 14 years of battling cancer, I'm getting better every day. I will live a long life he says...I believe him.

Dr. Downie has really helped me over the last 2+ years.. He immediately started chemotherapy when he first saw me as a patient with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. His knowledge and quick action started me on the right path of treatment. He continues to see me and monitor the cancer status and other issues that come up. He recommends and works with other Specialty Doctors that are needed in my fight against cancer. He also sees my Husband for anemia and has helped him greatly. Dr. Downie is really an exceptional physician.

I actually cried happy tears walking out to the car after seeing Dr Downie and visiting with Vivian and the other gal in the lab. You allowed me to accompany my wheelchair bound husband to his appointment and I felt so grateful for all of your kindnesses. Thank you so much

In 2017 I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. After a 11 month treatment, we felt I was as free of this Cancer as possible. In mid 2019, thanks to routine bloodwork, it was determined my cancer was paying me another visit in the form of Bone Cancer. I have been receiving treatment since August 2019 and my results so far have been very positive. As I told Dr. Downie in a recent visit "you and your team are the experts; i trust you with my life".
