Dr. Zoghi's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Zoghi "Dr. Zoghi received his medical degree (MD) and doctorate (PhD) from Texas A&M Health Science Center. He subsequently completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center/Parkland Hospital System in Dallas, Texas—ranked a top-ten program in internal medicine in the United States. Dr. Zoghi then completed his hematology/medical oncology fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and at the Cancer Therapy and Research Center (CTRC), a National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center with one of the largest Phase 1 clinical trial programs in the country During his hematology/medical oncology fellowship, Dr. Zoghi fell in love with bone marrow transplant. "With blood cancer patients (leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma), we give them chemotherapy and, two years later, they might come back because the cancer has recurred. With bone marrow transplant, we can move them one step above: it's the ultimate treatment possibility. We take very sick, very challenging patients and help them improve to the next level," says Dr. Zoghi. During his fellowship, he was chosen as a presenter at the American Society of Blood and Bone Marrow Transplantation conference regarding some exciting joint research being conducted at Methodist Hospital regarding the treatment of relapse in leukemia patients after bone marrow transplant. Also during his fellowship, Dr. Zoghi conducted very important research focused on microRNA as a new treatment for chemotherapy-resistant breast cancer. (See New Hope for Taming Triple-Negative Br Cancer to learn more about it). He holds a patent for this novel therapy in breast cancer. As a result of this research, Dr. Zoghi was one of only four recipients in Texas to receive the Texas Society of Clinical Oncology Fellows Award. His abstract was chosen out of 200 poster presentations to be further discussed in a symposium setting at the ASCO Breast Cancer Symposium in September 2012: Studies Lay Groundwork for Improving Management of Triple-Negative Br Cancer – and chosen out of thousands selected at the prestigious San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in December 2012. The Role of microRNA in Treatment of Chemo-Resistant Breast Cancer was presented to the Texas Society of Clinical Oncology Membership Conference in September 2012. Other physicians will pursue his joint research as a possible Phase I clinical trial. In conjunction with his clinical duties, continual medical education has also been an important passion of Dr. Zoghi. As a Chairman of Graduate Medical Education Committee at Methodist Healthcare System, he has been involved in the quality of education and work environment for fellows and residents in all programs. His goal is to implement what renowned physician Dr. Francis W. Peabody once said, "One of the essential qualities of the clinician is interest in humanity, for the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient." Dr. Zoghi is an assistant professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. He has received the distinguished honor of being named a Fellow of American College of Physicians. He is a member of a number of professional organizations: American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, Texas Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Hematology, American Board of Internal Medicine, American College of Physicians and American Medical Association."
