After practicing general medicine for 18 years, I was recruited to run a hospital clinic for overweight and obese patients. It was there that I discovered by lifelong passion for bariatric medicine. Overweight states can trigger almost all of the deadly modern diseases, including diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated blood lipids and cholesterol, heart and vascular disease and even cancers. But losing weight can modify or eliminate most of these problems. So, in the past 30 years or so, I guess you could say I've become the "anti-doc", a physician who treats people by making them well and taking them OFF medicines, rather than by adding to their list of pills. The biggest thing that I've learned in my practice is that weight loss itself is meaningless unless each person can solidify their new weight and avoid regain. We focus intensively on this issue at Weight Management Partners. In addition, my book "Refuse to Regain: 12 Tough Rules to Maintain the Body You've Earned" (available at amazon), and my blog (Refuse to Regain on the web) serve as resources to help patients with this difficult---but rewarding---challenge.
