Care Philosophy

I am a medical oncologist and hematologist with additional training in neuro-oncology. My passion is caring for patients in all stages of cancer, with an emphasis on quality-of-life. Physical, emotional, and spiritual health are all vital issues which are addressed comprehensively in our practice. Each patient receives evaluation and consideration of social work, nutrition, integrative medicine, and other subspecialty care. At a visit with us, you can expect listening, followed by a complete review of your medical records. We will review labs and imaging studies. As a visual learner, I find it helpful to show patients the images of their diseases and monitor response to therapy in tangible ways. Teaching patients and families is another crucial piece of our journey. Clinical research is another crucial element of our practice. I participate in clinical trial involving brain tumors, lung and breast cancer, and head/ neck cancer. We offer novel therapies through these trials.Read more

Conditions Treated

Dr. Sumrall says..

Neuro-Oncology is a passion of mine, so I completed a rigorous Neuro-Oncology Fellowship at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University Medical Center. Using the knowledge from my training. I came to Charlotte to expand our brain tumor offerings. In addition to national, cooperative group trials, we have been able to create and conduct investigator-initiated works. These clinical trials and other treatments are available through my clinic in Charlotte, NC and Charleston, SC.

In addition, I enjoy practicing general oncology. Breast cancer, lung cancer, head and neck cancer, and neuroendocrine cancer comprise most of my non-neurologic cases.

Why Does Experience Matter?

Even specialists specialize. One orthopedic surgeon might do nothing but hip surgeries, while another does nothing but knees. If you want the best possible care, it’s critical to match your medical need with the doctor who truly specializes in treating it.

Dr. Sumrall says...

Each day is an opportunity to positively impact the life of a patient and family that are distressed. When cancer strikes, a new normal settles in. It can feel impossible to make headway. Our team partners with patients and families to gently ease the transition.

Oncology was a natural fit for me: a field to help others and demonstrate compassion and love while using the medical knowledge that I have acquired through my training. Neuro-oncology drew me in for similar reasons. I am pleased to be one of under 200 MDs in the country who practice this subspecialty, and the only one in metro Charlotte.

Five years ago, I was thrilled to build a general oncology and neuro-oncology practice in an optimal setting. When not practicing in the clinic, I am conducting clinical research or teaching medical students, residents, or fellows. I was pleasantly surprised to be named a finalist for the Charlotte Business Journal Excellence in Health Care Award for Innovation in Health Care in 2015. In 2014, I was named the first recipient of Levine Cancer Institute's President's Award.
