Care Philosophy

Historically, most cervical surgeries result in fusion, which provides pain relief, but at a cost of loss of motion and higher risk of additional future surgeries. Recent clinical studies have shown that 4 years after cervical fusion, the risk of adjacent level degeneration is increased by nearly three-fold compared to disc replacement. The Disc Replacement Center at Jordan Valley Medical Center offers an alternative—artificial disc replacement, which provides pain relief and preserves motion and function." Dr. K. Is amazing! If you have back issues and need fusion and/or a artificial disc he is awesome. The fusion he does still allows movement and takes strain off needing further future fusion's. I know many people with a standard fusion, and they continue to deteriorate. He will answer your questions without making you feel like you're out of your place. The MA is great also! She is thorough and very understanding and prompt with any issues!

From the moment that I met Dr. K and his staff, I was very impressed by their professionalism and courtesy. Dr. K asked me about my symptoms and examined my MRI and told me he believed he could help me with my neck and nerve pain in my left arm and hand by performing disc replacement surgery. He patiently answered all of my concerns and questions, and I left believing that he genuinely wanted to help. Fast forward to today, 3 weeks out of surgery-I am pain free at last! Thanks so much Dr. K!!!

Dr. K is amazing. He is very honest and straightforward. He walked me through the pros and cons of fusion vs. disc replacement. Dr. K and his staff were instrumental in assisting with insurance issues and in scheduling surgery. Dr. K resolved my pain caused by another surgeon. I will be eternally grateful.

Dr. Khachatryan says...

Dr. Armen Khachatryan is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive microsurgery and the treatment of cervical and lumbar spinal disease.

In addition to broad training in many traditional spinal surgical options — such as decompression laminectomies and fusion — Dr. Khachatryan has extensive experience in minimally invasive surgery, motion preservation technology, artificial disc replacement and non-fusion technologies.

Dr Khachatryan has been a clinical investigator in a number of different FDA clinical trials, including a novel bioactive composite for vertebral fracture treatment and a pivotal FDA trial for Mobi-C cervical artificial disc replacement. After nearly six years of clinical trials, this device was approved by the FDA for clinical use in August 2013. Mobi-C is currently the only artificial disc replacement available in United States that has been approved by the FDA both for single and two level disc replacement surgery.

Dr. Khachatryan says...

If you suffer from one or more of the following neck or back conditions, you may be a candidate for artificial disc replacement surgery to relieve your pain symptoms:

  • Herniated/bulging disc
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Foraminal stenosis
  • Chronic neck pain
  • Arthritis of the spine
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Some cases of cervical spondylotic myelopathy (spinal cord compression)

Dr. Khachatryan says...

Similar to hip and knee joint replacements, significant advancements have been made in disc replacement surgery for treating neck and spine conditions. Unlike traditional spinal fusion, which involves removing painful discs and fusing two or more vertebrae together — which result in limited mobility — disc replacement surgery replaces the painful disc with an artificial disc to enable the neck/spine to function as intended. Artificial discs are structurally similar to natural discs, which serve as shock absorbers in the neck and back.
