Kersten is a dual-board certified, fellowship trained, orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine injuries and arthroscopic and open surgical management of injuries of the body. He has dual board certification in Orthopedic surgery, as well as Orthopedic Sports Medicine. He has special interest in disorders of the shoulder, knee, and elbow. Dr. Kersten practices at Southeastern Sports Medicine, in Asheville, NC, and has hospital privileges at Pardee Hospital, in Hendersonville, NC, and Park Ridge Hospital. He also sees patients at satellite offices in Hendersonville and Waynesville. He cares for multiple high school athletic teams in Buncombe, Haywood, and Hendersonville counties. Dr. Kersten completed his residency at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI. Beaumont is one of the U.S. News top-ranked hospitals and has one of the highest surgical volumes for orthopaedic procedures in the country. He then completed a one-year fellowship in sports medicine, arthroscopy, and shoulder arthroplasty in San Diego, CA. During this year of training, he assisted in coverage of the San Diego Padres Major League Baseball team, San Diego State University football and soccer teams, and trained under leaders in the field, including Dr. Jim Esch, the "father" of shoulder arthroscopy. Dr. Kersten has completed extensive research in the areas of shoulder instability, shoulder implant design, throwing injuries in pitchers, and meniscal injuries. He is currently a reviewer for two orthopedic scientific journals, American Journal of Sports Medicine as well as Arthroscopy. "
