Dr. Andrew D. He then completed a one-year fellowship in sports medicine, arthroscopy, and shoulder arthroplasty in San Diego, CA. During this year of training, he assisted in coverage of the San Diego Padres Major League Baseball team, San Diego State University football and soccer teams, and trained under leaders in the field, including Dr. Jim Esch, the "father" of shoulder arthroscopy. Dr. Kersten has completed extensive research in the areas of shoulder instability, shoulder implant design, throwing injuries in pitchers, and meniscal injuries. He is currently a reviewer for two orthopedic scientific journals, American Journal of Sports Medicine as well as Arthroscopy.

As an Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Kersten is board certified to operate on most joints in the body, including the shoulder, knee, elbow, wrist, and ankle.  His specialty training (fellowship) included an extra year of education in shoulder surgery, knee surgery, and elbow surgery, as well as a second board certification in Orthopedic Sports Medicine.

Surgically, arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder and knee, as well as replacements and advanced soft tissue reconstructions of those joints are the majority of his practice.

Fellowship trained in sports medicine and arthroscopy, with special interest in disorders of the shoulder, knee, and elbow.  Dr. Kersten performs primary surgery for most conditions, as well as second opinion and revision operations.  From arthroscopic to open procedures including replacements and shoulder arthroplasty revision operations.  I also perform the subchondroplasty procedure.
