Due to an ovarian cancer scare my husband and I went to Duke to have Dr. Berchuck review my case. He was thorough and made me feel confident in his ability. The setting is actually a very scary place since it is in the Surgical Onocology department at Duke Hospital. There were several women without hair and one who looked like she didn't have much time left. The volunteers who "help" there are awesome!!! A nurse said patients come to see Dr. Berchuck as far away as California.

      • Nature of Complaint: INCIDENT LOCATION: DURHAM, NC /// PRACTITIONER COMMENTS: Elderly patient treated for cervical cancer with radiation therapy was followed intermittently for nine years. Patient complained of abdominal pain to her primary care physician (who resided in a neighboring state). A CT was ordered and performed in the neighboring state. That radiologist did not have patient's history of pelvic radiation and reported that the findings were concerning for malignancy. Patient was evaluated who reviewed the actual CT scans himself. Based on his years of clinical experience concluded the changes noted on the CT were secondary to uterine scarring due to radiation rather than malignancy. Furthermore, at the time of the CT the patient was asymptomatic for uterine pathology. A little over one year later the patient was diagnosed with uterine cancer. Why Does Experience Matter?

Even specialists specialize. One orthopedic surgeon might do nothing but hip surgeries, while another does nothing but knees. If you want the best possible care, it’s critical to match your medical need with the doctor who truly specializes in treating it.
