After conducting a lot of research of different orthopedic surgeons, I decided to go with Dr. Zhang for my hip surgeries. He is one of the best providers that I have ever seen. Dr. Zhang is extremely knowledgeable in this area yet is also caring and compassionate. He remembers the small details and can explain each step of the surgery process clearly and effectively in everyday nomenclature.

Dr. Zhang performed arthroscopic surgery on my left hip to repair a torn labrum and correct femoroacetabular impingement. I interviewed 2 surgeons before having this surgery and went with Dr. Zhang because he was more personable and informative and was more willing to discuss non-surgical options. The surgery went perfectly and is healing nicely with minimal scarring (2 tiny incisions). I did not need to use prescription-strength pain relievers and was able to walk around the house without crutches after 1 week. Dr. Zhang did a great job explaining all aspects of the procedure and recovery both pre- and post-op. The narrated videos of the procedure were a nice touch. I am grateful for the excellent care I received and wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Zhang and his team at UCSF.

Dr. Zhang has been a delight working with and I couldn’t have asked for a better doctor. I have had hip problems for almost 10 years and nobody has been able to diagnose me correctly. After looking at my radiology reports On my very first visit Dr. Zhang new exactly how to help me and what was wrong with me. He performed surgery on both my right and left hip due to torn labrum’s and FAI. My recovery process has been a roller coaster due to my hips being injured for so long, but Dr. Zhang has been there every step of the way to give advice and help the healing/strengthening process. Overall I am extremely thankful and blessed to have such a kind, intelligent, and skilled surgeon/doctor to be working with.

Dr. Zhang performed arthroscopic hip surgery on me for a labrum repair and femoroplasty. The surgery went well and I am recovering above expectations. It's been less than 6 weeks and I can already take short hikes. The surgery site only had 2 'holes' whereas other surgeons were talking about 3-5 holes, the minimally invasive surgery kept the pain level very low. Dr. Zhang is clearly an expert in arthroscopy, his level of knowledge, kindness and manners made me feel at ease. I would absolutely recommend him if you need arthroscopic surgery done. The only negative point was dealing with UCSF and their horrific billing system. I am fortunate to have a good health insurance but this isn't the case for everyone. This should absolutely not tarnish Dr. Zhang reputation however, he's done a stellar job.

I was referred to Dr. Zhang through my uncle (who is a doctor) asking his network about the best person to see in San Francisco for a hip injury. I had a really great experience getting surgery for FAI and a torn labrum with Dr. Zhang. He clearly explained everything in my pre and post op visits, giving me plenty of opportunities to ask questions and answering them patiently and warmly. The surgery itself went smoothly and I’ve had very little pain in the first two weeks. This was my first time getting surgery, and I felt informed and well taken care of throughout the experience. Dr. Zhang also shared an edited video of the surgery (from the arthroscopic camera) afterwards, with explanations of what was happening at each step. It was very cool, and also made me very glad I’d gotten the issue taken care of once I saw it up close! I’ve already been recommending Dr. Zhang to anyone who asks me about my surgery.

Dr Zhang is typical of today's doctor; no empathy, no help, only diagnose, move on, no follow up; he has only spent a whopping 9 minutes on my case. Staff and Doctor is robotic and uninterested in helping you with any of the normal post injury issues. Find another Clinic and Doctor, these guys only want your cash

Dr. Zhang is amazing! He was able to save my meniscus even though it was torn in a very bad spot, as well as reconstruct my ACL. He is extremely responsive on MyChart and even called me after hours to let me know the results of my MRI. I am so thankful To have had Dr. Zhang be the one to perform my surgery. Thank you everyone at the UCSF Orthopedic Institute for helping me through this!

I ended up receiving a diagnostic steroid injection from UCSF, and eventually hip arthroscopy from Dr. Zhang. As of now, I consider the surgery very successful as I'm able to play sports and running thus far without pain. In terms of the surgery itself, I was super impressed with the whole process, especially that he was able to fix the issue he identified in the MRI and I was in no pain afterwards. He even shared a narrated video of the surgery afterwards so I could learn more about the procedure. Dr. Zhang answered all the questions I had at my visits and did not rush me. That said, patients should come prepared with questions as otherwise you may not leave with all the information you are looking for. I'd highly recommend Dr. Zhang given my experience and am super thankful to have been treated by him.

Dr Zhang is incredible, he takes the time to teach us what is going on, he listens and responds, and he obviously has excellent technical skills since the operation on my hip was a miracle. By the time the general anesthesia wore off, my hip already felt better than before the operation. Amazing, I'm so thrilled to know him and have him in my network!

Dr Zhang repaired my ACL and meniscus. He was very professional, thorough and took the time to explain the details and answer all my questions. He even gave me a video with narration showing the injury beforehand and then the repair afterwards. I would definitely recommend him for knee related injuries.

He exudes intelligence and competence. I am not clear this branch of medicine really priorities bedside manner, but his sure is excellent. His explanations are cogent and eloquent to a non medical person, his manner patient and measured and his approach direct and kind. I have found him to be extremely responsive, direct, intelligent and warm. Also, two weeks post surgery, I have nothing but praise for his ability to perform an ACL reconstruction. Hopefully I can confirm in six month ;-)

I have been dealing with a knee injury for months and finally got an MRI confirming the traumatic meniscus tears. I had had enough conservative treatments and knew that the root tears would not heal and needed repair. I researched what I wanted and when I saw Dr. Zhang it was as if he read my mind. We both agreed the tears would not heal without intervention especially with my sports related lifestyle. He booked me asap and 4 days later I was in surgery. Dr. Zhang is so professional, engaging and answered all my questions. The staff are all wonderful. UCSF has always come through for me. They get it... I'm super active and my life revolves around my outdoor sports. They are professional and help you with your goals of getting back out there!
