This content was provided by Dr. Hemming "Alan Hemming, MD, is a board-certified surgeon who is recognized as one of the country's leading liver surgeons. He specializes in open and laparoscopic liver and bile duct surgery. He has performed more than 1,000 liver transplants and resections and has a particular interest in dealing with complex cases of liver and bile duct cancer. He is particularly well known for merging technical components of both transplantation and oncologic liver surgery to provide an aggressive approach to liver malignancy. He is one of only a few surgeons in the country to perform ex vivo liver surgery, and is part of the UC San Diego Health team that performs living-donor liver transplantation. Along with liver transplantation, Dr. Hemming's areas of clinical expertise include benign and malignant conditions of the liver, pancreas and bile duct as well as the surgical management of portal hypertension. Dr. Hemming also serves as professor of Surgery and chief of the Division of Abdominal Transplantation and Hepatobiliary Surgery at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He has authored over 150 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and contributed multiple book chapters. He has been recognized by both America's Top Doctors and Best Doctors in America as an outstanding surgeon in the fields of both transplantation and hepatobiliary malignancy. Dr. Hemming received his medical degree from University of British Columbia in Vancouver Canada. He completed his surgical residency and his Masters of Science in Surgical Research at at University of British Columbia. Dr. Hemming completed a two-year fellowship in multiorgan transplantation and hepatobiliary surgery at the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada. Dr. Hemming's first staff appointment was as assistant professor of surgery at University of Toronto with the world-renowned liver transplant and hepatobiliary surgery group. In 1999, he accepted a position at the University of Florida. He rose to professor of surgery, director of the Center for Hepatobiliary Disease, and chief of the Division of Hepatobiliary Surgery and Liver Transplantation. While at the University of Florida, Dr. Hemming developed the largest referral center in the Southeast for surgical hepatobiliary disease. It grew to perform over 100 liver transplants and over 150 liver resections per year. Dr. Hemming is a member of the Society of University Surgeons, the Southern Surgical Society, the American Surgical Association and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, and the Halsted Society. Dr. Hemming is board-certified in surgery."
