Care Philosophy

Dr. Rubinstein believes effective communication and trust are the cornerstone of the doctor-patient relationship. He knows his most important role while communicating is to listen. This enables him to understand a person's unique situation, what they have been through in life and in other treatment settings, and their philosophy related to treatment options. Only then can he and the office staff help fill in gaps of knowledge so common in the US as a result of misinformation, stigma and the bias of others. Trust is crucial, since essentially all people with the illness of addiction have broken bonds of trust due to the behaviors that define addiction. Dr. Rubinstein and staff aim to work with you to build a trusting relationship here, with us, and nurture that moving forward. You can then utilize your own power, once you have more control over craving and the physical symptoms of withdrawal, to build relationships that are important to you in your life.Read more

Conditions Treated

Dr. Rubinstein says..

Dr. Rubinstein and his staff truly care about our patients: people addicted to narcotic pain pills or heroin.  Our team provides Medication Assisted Treatment.  We also value and expect counseling and psycho-social support for each one.  Dr. Rubinstein treats dual diagnosis: the addiction (a chronic relapsing brain disease) and  associated mood conditions (also chronic illnesses involving the brain).  We follow Best Practices, utilize evidence based procedures, and our outcomes far exceed national standards.  Recovery is a lifelong process, because addiction is chronic and not curable.  Like Diabetes and Asthma, it can be controlled so you can live a full life, rebuilding relationships & reaching for/achieving new goals.

Caring about each patient & family also requires improving US healthcare.   He thus teaches doctors, consults for Fed and State Lawmakers, jail and Def.Lawyers and has been interviewed on WGN & Fox32 TV, The Daily Beast, Chicago Tribune Papers, AP and more.

Please note that American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), the largest organization regulating Board Certification in the U.S., now formally recognizes Addiction Medicine as a sub-specialty via ABAM (Amer. Board of Addiction Medicine).  Dr. Rubinstein has fulfilled all requirements and has a diploma stating he is Board Certified in Addiction Medicine (in addition to Internal Medicine).

Apparently healthgrades has not yet updated this website to enable physicians who are Board Certified in Internal Medicine to also choose Addiction Medicine from the list of Board Certifications.  The section on this healthgrades website is a structured field, so only Psychiatrists are able to show Board Cert. in Addiction Psychiatry.

Dr. Rubinstein won't choose that option since he is not a psychiatrist and does not practice addiction psychiatry.  He does, however, have expertise in medication management of many conditions commonly found in those with addiction.

Why Does Experience Matter?

Even specialists specialize. One orthopedic surgeon might do nothing but hip surgeries, while another does nothing but knees. If you want the best possible care, it’s critical to match your medical need with the doctor who truly specializes in treating it.
