Patient Comments (1)

I went to see Dr Adam Black along with my daughter last Thursday in the Er we were both suffering from upper respiratory infections. He prescribed my daughter meds. But no steroids for me even though I requested them. I said without treatment for myself my fear will be that I will end up far worse...more

Alas, sometimes you have to make an unpopular decision. Steroids really have no role in viral URI's. If anything, the steroid-induced immunosuppression would make developing a pneumonia even more likely. I attempted to convey this message to the patient, but it seems like the education didn't stick. Withholding unnecessary antibiotics also generates frequent complaints and low rankings. Even though it protects the patient and the community from resistance, it often upsets the patient.
