Biography: <p>Dr. Pedro Coutinho is a fellowship-trained neurosurgeon specializing in spine surgery with&nbsp;more than a decade of practice experience.&nbsp;</p> <p>Dr. Coutinho completed his neurosurgical residency at Hospital Souza Aguiar, one of the busiest level 1 trauma centers in Latin America, where he developed a special interest in complex spinal surgery and reconstruction. After completing his neurosurgical training, he helped to start the Neuro Spine Center, a private practice group in Brazil. For nearly a decade, Dr. Coutinho served as the Chief Executive Officer and Spine Section Director of the Neuro Spine Center Group. In that position, he was responsible for managing the neurosurgical operations of two of the most highly regarded hospitals in the region between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, including performing and supervising surgical interventions across all manner of vertebral pathologies, including degenerative disorders, spinal trauma, infection, and cancers, as well as for spearheading negotiations with insurance companies and other members of the hospital leadership. Dr. Coutinho was also responsible for making strategic decisions for the group, including the development of major initiatives to grow the practice's business. To date, Dr. Coutinho has successfully performed nearly 2,400 spinal surgeries, including approximately 1,200 minimally invasive procedures.</p> <p>Dr. Coutinho has completed two years of clinical fellowships in two different institutions. He completed a minimally invasive and complex spine surgery fellowship at the University of Miami and then finished an orthopedic spine surgery fellowship at Yale School of Medicine.</p> <p>Dr. Coutinho has published articles in peer-reviewed publications and has authored book chapters in the field of spine surgery. He has frequently presented lectures in national and international neurosurgical meetings and conferences. He is also a regular reviewer of World Neurosurgery Journal and The Spine Journal, and performed more than 90 manuscript reviews in the spine field.</p> <p>Dr. Pedro Coutinho has experience in spinal oncology, complex trauma, robotics, advanced image guidance and minimally invasive techniques. He treats a variety of vertebral spine conditions including Chiari malformations, disk herniations, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, complex deformities, fractures, spinal infection, and primary and metastatic spine tumors. However, having more than a decade of clinical experience, Dr. Coutinho believes that surgical treatment for spinal diseases should only be used as the last resort, strongly advocating in favor of the conservative management every time it is possible.</p> <p>He has staff appointments with St. Vincent's Medical Center, in Bridgeport. Dr. Coutinho is board certified by the Brazilian Neurosurgery Society/Brazilian Medical Association, and a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurologic Surgeons, North American Spine Society, AO Spine and the Brazilian Neurosurgery Society.</p>

Biography: <p>Dr. Cavalcanti graduated Cum Laude from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro medical school, Brazil, which is an institution with more than 210 years. After his neurosurgical training in Rio de Janeiro, Dr. Cavalcanti spent more than two years in neurosurgical research at the skull base lab at the world-renown Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, under the direct supervision of the legendary cerebrovascular neurosurgeon Dr. Robert Spetzler (2008-2010).</p> <p>From 2010 to 2011, Dr. Cavalcanti completed a complex skull base fellowship with Dr. Luis Borba, one of the world leaders in the field, at the Evangelic University Hospital in Curitiba, Brazil.</p> <p>With intense training on cerebral bypass, including at the University of Zurich in Switzerland on 2013, Dr. Cavalcanti became one of a handful number of neurosurgeons performing cerebral revascularization in Brazil. This way, he could treat several patients with Moyamoya disease and other forms of cerebrovascular insufficiency, and those with complex aneurysms.</p> <p>In 2013, Dr. Cavalcanti was appointed Director of cerebrovascular surgery in a brand new reference center in Rio de Janeiro, the Paulo Niemeyer State Brain Institute, a world-class hospital entirely devoted to neurosurgery, where he practiced for five years. It is currently the second busiest department in the country, considering cranial neurosurgery. One of his responsibilities was to coordinate and teach their 15 residents. Teaching neurosurgical skills to residents with different backgrounds in daily-basis is also a legitim way to improve your own skills. There, he personally brought a new minimally invasive craniotomy (skull opening) to their daily practice, pioneering the use of minicraniotomies at that large state. There he treated all aspects of cerebrovascular disease including aneurysms, vascular malformations, Moyamoya disease, and intracranial atherosclerosis including bypass surgery. He also treated all aspects of brain tumor and skullbase surgery (meningiomas, schwannomas) as well as gliomas and brain metastases.</p> <p>Dr. Cavalcanti obtained a PhD degree in the University of Sao Paulo (USP) in 2018, the most respected Brazilian university.</p> <p>In addition to his clinical experience and research on open vascular neurosurgery, Dr. Cavalcanti recently completed two additional fellowships, endovascular neurosurgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute and his most recent experience, a neurointerventional radiology fellowship at the New York University.
