Care Philosophy: I believe health care should be easily accessible, affordable, transparent, patient-centric and well co-ordinated. My job as a cardiologist revolves around patient education, prevention and treatment. My approach to patient care is to figure out what I would want if I was the patient themselves. This helps me to put patient first. I use my knowledge and experience in the context of patients wishes, fears and preferences to come up with the best treatment plan for any individual patient. Thank you for visiting my page. Your feedback helps me to serve you better

Care Philosophy: I believe that each patient is a complex individual with his/her own unique biopsychosocial components. What this really means is that I care about how you feel, how you want to be treated, how you live, and how life has affected you. I don't just treat your disease I treat the complete you. Unlike, most modern days physicians, I do spend a reasonable amount of time with my patients and address all of their concerns. But of course, if you are in a hurry and just want me to be quick and simple, I can do that too!

Care Philosophy: For me, it is a distinct privilege to practice at the forefront of innovative medicine at Weill Cornell in the community in which I reside. My practice in Lower Manhattan is special to me because the very people I care for are the same people I interact with on a regular basis, whether it's at the local coffee shop, the neighborhood park, or the grocery store. I am fortunate to be able to give back to my local community in that way, while at the same time engaging in clinical research at Weill Cornell that focuses on developing new therapies to improve the quality and duration of the patients we serve.

Biography:
I was always fascinated by the sciences. As a biochemistry major in college, I debated pursuing a career in research in the field of monoclonal antibody therapy for the treatment of cancer or pursuing a career in medicine. After many hours in the laboratory, I realized that it lacked a significant component that I was searching for—the human component. It was at that time I decided to pursue a career in medicine. It was the best of all worlds in that it required the integration of science and the compassion of treating patients.

During medical school and my early training as an intern, I developed a deep interest in cardiology. I felt it was a field with great scientific advancements and a field that I could make a significant difference in patients' lives. While completing my fellowship, I developed a passion for interventional cardiology, as progress in the field was expanding exponentially.

With more than 20 years of experience in my field, I have seen the development of stents, drug eluting stents, rotational atherectomy, and noninvasive ways to structural heart disease. This new frontier of treating valvular heart disease has become a passion of mine. With the advent of TAVR to the expectations of treating the Mitral Valve with TMVR, we are at the forefront of treating valvular heart disease.

Currently, I treat patients for all aspects of cardiovascular disease in my office. My specialty is interventional cardiology which encompasses the treatment of coronary artery disease, valvular and structural heart disease.

The procedures I perform include coronary angiography and coronary interventions with drug eluting stents, atherectomy, and thrombectomy. I perform all imaging modalities including intravascular ultrasound and OCT. I also perform high risk coronary interventions, which is one of my passions. I perform the procedures with hemodynamic support, including intra-aortic balloon pump and impella support.

My other expertise is in the treatment of valvular heart disease. As Medical Director of the Transcatheter Valve Program at NYU Winthrop, I treat the aortic valve with transcatheter Aortic valve replacement. We are involved in many research protocols for the treatment of various conditions. For instance, the mitral valve is treated with transcatheter mitral repair (mitral clip) and I am currently involved in the pivotal trial for transcatheter mitral valve replacement for the medtronic intrepid valve.

At NYU Winthrop, we are one of the most experienced teams in the country and have excellent outcomes. We have a well-organized team that will walk our patients through the entire process. We have nurse co-ordinators/navigators that are in continuous contact with the patient and who make sure that all tests are performed in a timely manner. They will answer any questions the patient and family may have. Our PAs are always available for any clinical questions and concerns as well. There is also an entire scheduling team that will schedule the tests needed to be performed at the time of their visit to the office. I personally make myself available for any questions throughout the treatment process.

As a part of NYU Winthrop, our philosophy is to treat the patient and the family with respect, compassion and as if they were our family members. We keep our patients informed of all their options, explaining all alternatives of therapy and the risks associated with them.

Biography: Christopher Irobunda, MD, is an Associate Professor at CUMC and an interventionalist. He is also Vice Chair of the Faculty Development focusing on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion within the Department of Medicine. He trained as a general and interventional cardiologist. Dr. Irobunda has been a full-time faculty since 2003. He obtained his MD/PhD in the Medical Scientist Training Program at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY. His PhD was in Molecular Pharmacology, specifically on the cyclic Adenosine MonoPhosphate/beta-adrenergic signal transduction system. He subsequently completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at New York University Medical Center, followed by his General and Interventional Cardiology Fellowship here at Columbia University Medical Center. After completing his medical training and research study, he shifted his concentration to patient care and the education of aspiring young physicians. Dr. Irobunda is ardently dedicated to uncompromised patient care and teaching. His primary focus is individualized patient care and patient advocacy. Given his training as a medical scientist, it is hardly surprising that he is a keen diagnostician. He has a penchant for complex cardiac issues and other medical problems that can sometimes mask or aggravate the cardiac disease. His aptitude for unraveling these medical conundrums has led to medical diagnoses for patients who have come to him for second and even third opinions. However, above all else, his true genius is his ability to relate to his patients with intelligence, curiosity, patience, compassion, and humor. His ability to waylay even the most apprehensive of patients with his aura of reassurance and understanding has garnered him a continually growing medical practice. Again and again, individuals will refer family members and friends because of the empathy and level of care constantly provided. Indeed, his unceasing diligence has led him to become a physician member of Columbia University Medical Centers Patient Facilitated Services, an organization directed at patient satisfaction and outreach. Dr. Irobunda has also been the primary cardiologist for patients undergoing liver transplant evaluations at New York Presbyterian since 2004. When not in his private practice, he takes great pleasure in helping train the new influx of physicians in the only ethical way to practice medicine—patient-centered care. Dr. Irobunda has been a Supervisor and Attending Faculty for the Fundamentals of Clinical Medicine for First Year Medical Students at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons since 2011, a program that endeavors to instill exceptional patient-doctor communication and trust. He encourages future medical practitioners to listen to the patient and learn to interpret and analyze the information being imported; to realize that the seemingly insignificant details sometimes lead to the culprit of an individual''s illness. He has been a lecturer with International Postgraduate Organization for Knowledgetransfer, Research, and Teaching Excellent Students (IPOKRaTES) in Europe. IPOKRaTES offers opportunities for physicians from a plethora of countries to observe and gain instruction regarding differing methods in patient care practices. Since the summer of 2012, Dr. Irobunda has become involved in New York Presbyterian Hospital''s Lange Youth Program, which seeks to prepare and enumerate the rigors of medical school for high school students. Dr. Irobunda is active in numerous community outreach organizations-Abyssian Baptist Church (NY), JP Morgan Chase Employee Education Program, Riverside Church Seniors, and Sister to Sister: The Women''s Heart Health Foundation, to name a few. He seeks to educate the public on cardiovascular issues and ways to make everyday lifestyle modifications to help reduce these risks. In addition to being an interventional cardiologist who can perform angioplasties and stent placements, he emphasizes the prevention and treatment of heart disease through diet, exercise, and medical therapy.
