After leaving the hospital, patients are randomly selected to answer the standardized, multiple-question survey developed by the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS). Healthgrades obtains this survey data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
