I found Dr Ayer through a co worker who had broken his back. I've had neck issues since my early twenties. When I went to see Dr Ayer I was suffering from numbness in my face and neck and these random electrical shock type pains that would cause me to jump. Dr Ayer was very patient with me and explained in all the detail I asked for what he saw on the scans and what the procedure would entail. He had to lock down my c4-c6, but due to a secondary issue of having bony growth in one of my ligaments we opted to go through the back of my neck. I fully expected to have lost some rotation in my neck, but I haven't. It's been a little over a year since my surgery, and in all honesty I feel better now than I have in almost 2 decades.

I learned too late that Ayer was playing “pinball” between OR suites the day he shoved that shard of metal into my epidural space (rather than placing it like the 2 trials were done prior to receiving it) and ripping one of my blood vessels, things got worse. I was progressively losing feeling from my left arm to left leg to right leg to right arm to not being able to breathe, all the while telling the Gwinnett Medical Center PACU nurse about the paralysis, just for her to insist it was normal, & refuse to call the doctor. Finally, I grabbed the d/c area RN & told her what was going on. Thinking that when Dr Ayer was called, he would know it had to be a hematoma putting pressure on my spinal cord & take me back to evacuate the clot. Instead, he said he was just about to put in another spinal cord stimulator in someone else & I would have WAIT for his partner to drive in from home! My paralysis was progressing around my body, so I knew the vessel he had ripped open when he blindly shove

Compassionate. Progressive - convinced he employs the latest techniques and works hard to stay current in his field. I researched that he teaches other surgeons surgery! My back was dramatically improved by his procedure.

My spouse has GBM and Dr. Ayer was/is our surgeon. We, quite frankly, adore him. Thank you Dr. Ayer for everything you’ve done. A truly professional and human doctor. So many doctors become cold and indifferent. It has meant the world to us to benefit from your expertise and humanity. Please never lose it. Merry Christmas again to you and yours.

I have had multiple visits with other neuro-surgeons in the past, and Dr. Ayer is by far the best. The best bed side manner and staff I have seen.

Came to Dr. Ayer with my 86 year old mother in law. She had degenerative disks and had many falls the last one caused compression of the disk causing severe pain. No one wanted to touch her and her pain was unbearable. He was able to do a Laminectomy and fusion which made her life better. Always available to speak with and appreciate his counsel and advice. His staff was also very caring and helpful. Would highly recommend and trust.

Had sudden onset loss of strength in dominate right arm. Met with a couple doctors from Emory to discuss my issue. It was discovered through an MRI that I had compressed C5/6 and restricted nerve. The advice was to have surgery, but something was missing so I wanted a second opinion. We reached out to Dr Ayer and he worked in an appointment in very short order. The original diagnosis was correct, however the previous doctors missed other conditions that were contributing factors to my loss of strength and probably not related to the C5/6 compression. After much considertion and discussion we decided to move forward with ACDF surgery (Anterior Cervical Discectomy Fusion) which was two weeks ago today. I am confident my condition will contiue to improve under the care of Dr. Ayer. Highly recommend!

Dr.Ayer is the best neurosurgeon. I researched in the metro area and found two neurosurgeons I would consider. I am so happy I made the best choice. He is so knowledgeable and prepares his staff before each surgery while in the operating room. Kudos to his staff, also!!!

My back was so bad, and hurt constantly, I was restricted in what I could do. But after Dr. Ayer operated, my pain greatly decreased. Thank you Dr. Ayer. Because another doctor had operated on me, other doctors would not touch my spine.

He will listen, talk to you and explain. He will even calmly listen when you disagree with something. I had a 2 level diskectomy with fusion and I adked how long before I could ride my horse. He said about a year. Well I got upset and explained all the benefits (gentle movement of the horse quietly moving almost every muscle in your body; movement so you don’t stiffen up; and the mental benefits.) I explained I had a very gentle horse who took her responsibilities seriously. He listened, asked questions and finally said don’t fall off. I did wait 2 months before I rode.
