Dr. Farrar's bio

This content was provided by Dr. Farrar "Our ultimate mission is to give our patients the smile of their dreams and be right there with them for every step of the journey! We love to create beautiful, healthy smiles for our patients… who become our friends. We know how healthy, straight teeth give people more self-confidence and self-esteem which means more smiles and laughter and leads to a healthier, happier life. We provide a unique experience – from the first step in, you'll feel the warm, upbeat atmosphere. When you walk into the office of Joe Farrar, D.M.D., the first thing you notice is the laughter. It ripples from every direction. Staff, patients and parents enjoy interacting with each other. We are a super friendly group with an upbeat personality; you'll hear the laughter and joking, all creating a fun, enjoyable visit. It's enough to make you smile. And that's what orthodontist Joe Farrar wants you to do: smile and be confident doing so. "My greatest reward is seeing a shy, quiet young person become confident and self-assured. I don't do that for them, but I help them find it in themselves," Farrar says with a smile. "It is a rush for me when I take their braces off and see how happy they are with how they look. That's the best part of my work." Why Have Braces? Of course, there are lots of reasons to have braces in addition to how your smile looks. "Braces align teeth so that they are not only more attractive, but also so they are healthy throughout your life. Straight teeth are easier to clean and maintain properly," Farrar explains. And since we are living longer, it's important to start taking care of those pearly whites early on in life. "The American Association of Orthodontists encourages parents to bring their children in around age 7 for an initial examination," he states. "We encourage regular visits with their dentist as well." "There is no real chart of when to bring your child in to the orthodontist," Farrar explains. "Each child is on his or her own timing with growing their teeth. I've seen a 9-year-old with no baby teeth left, and I've seen high school students who still have one or two baby teeth." These examinations are at no charge. "We call this service 'observation'. We want to see a child about every six months just to keep track of how the teeth are coming in," Farrar continues. "The exam takes about five minutes, and we keep their primary dentist up-to-date on what we observe. It's an opportunity for the child to get used to being in our office and for the parents to learn more about their children's teeth. And it's a chance for everyone to get to know each other, to feel more at home. It's a positive experience all around." What is the Biggest Misconception About Braces? "People think that braces are not affordable," Dr. Farrar states immediately. "The initial visit is free of charge, and braces can be affordable with payment plans and other options. We will work with you to determine a financial arrangement that fits your budget." Braces have changed a lot over the years, too, he says. "The wires are so much lighter than before, and the forces used are continuous light pressure instead of the previous periodic tightening that was less comfortable." Fewer visits are required, and there is a greater ease of use of braces. "While the treatment itself hasn't changed, the tools and materials have improved over the years so that it takes less than an hour for an initial placement of braces," he states. And braces are much more aesthetic than they used to be. "We now have totally clear braces as well as braces that are fit on the back of teeth so they aren't even in sight," Dr. Farrar explains. Another difference he has seen over the years? "I have more adult patients," he says. Patient ages range from 7 to 80 years old! "We are now able to treat conditions that previously required surgery," he proudly states."
