What is an Orthodontist?Orthodontics is a specialty within the dental field that requires additional schooling in order to obtain certification. To become an orthodontist, dentists must go on to complete an orthodontic residency after graduation in order to become certified by the American Board of Orthodontics.(which means Orthodontist are more knowledgeable in the field of straightening teeth without harming the roots of a tooth).

It usually requires about 10 to 11 years of school to go from being a high school graduate to being a certified orthodontist.

Orthodontists can perform dental cleanings, fill cavities and perform other treatments that are normally done by a dentist, but they usually stick to performing procedures that are within their specialty. They are able to diagnose and treat a variety of oral conditions that deal with misaligned teeth and jaw structures.

An orthodontist may become board certified by the American Board of Orthodontics by successfully completing a written examination and a clinical examination. Once this has been completed, the orthodontist will be awarded a time-limited certificate. By the end of the time-limited certificate, a Board Certified orthodontist must have taken the appropriate renewal examination to remain board certified
