A graduate of the cardiology fellowship program at the National Naval Medical Center/Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Bethesda, MD, he was named Outstanding Fellow upon completion of his training there. He went on to serve as a pulmonary hypertension Clinical Fellow at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Previously, he earned his medical degree at the Boston University School of Medicine. Prior to becoming the Medical Director of Genomics and Personalized Health at AdventHealth for Children, he served as Director of Newborn Screening and led the biochemical genetics lab at the esteemed King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center in Saudi Arabia. He has also served on the faculty and in various leadership roles at the University of Kansas, University of Missouri, Vanderbilt University and elsewhere. His research interests include biochemical genetics and clinical cytogenetics, newborn screening and tandem mass spectrometry, novel therapies and clinical trials to address metabolic genetic disorders, gene mapping of single gene disorders, and more. biography: Margarita P. Nieto Moreno, MD, MBA, is a genetics physician and a member of the American College of Medical Genetics and the American Medical Association. She received her medical degree from the Universidad Libre de Colombia in Barranquilla, Colombia where she graduated with the distinction of summa cum laude — ranking first in her class. Dr. Nieto Moreno has also completed a fellowship in Medical Biochemical Genetics from Duke University Medical School in Durham, North Carolina. She is fluent in both English and Spanish.

biography: <p>Maria Descartes, M.D., is a medical genetics physician at Miami Cancer Institute. Dr. Descartes specializes in evaluating patients' family histories of cancer and providing cancer risk assessments for patients and their families during diagnosis and surveillance. She is fluent in English and Spanish. Prior to joining Miami Cancer Institute in 2021, Dr. Descartes was on staff at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she was a professor of medical genetics and pediatrics and medical director of genetic counseling from 2008 to 2013. Dr. Descartes' research has been published in peer-reviewed publications, including The Journal of Pediatric Genetics, The Journal of Inherited Metabolic Disease, Genetics in Medicine and the American Journal of Medical Genetics. She has served as a reviewer for many publications, including the American Journal of Medical Genetics, The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal, the Journal of Pediatric Genetics, the British Medical Journal, WebMD and Clinical Dysmorphology. She has also presented at numerous industry events and conferences. Dr. Descartes' approach to patient care is to be empathetic and honest with her patients. She is passionate about using genetics to ensure a correct diagnosis, educate, anticipate challenges and create surveillance recommendations. biography: <p>I am a genetics specialist at Memorial Healthcare System. I care for patients with complex genetic disorders and use advanced genetic testing to find the cause and, when possible, treatment. I also work with patients with genetic syndromes, neurological disorders with a genetic cause, and have a special interest in the diagnosis and treatment of lipid-related genetic disorders.</p> <p>I was drawn to genetics and genomics because I recognized that our genes hold the answers that many patients and families facing undiagnosed conditions are looking for. As the tests and tools become more complex, they require more expertise to interpret but also cover many conditions we previously could not diagnose.</p> <p>Each day, I look forward to doing my best for my patients and their families. I listen carefully to what they tell me and use all my experience and the most current genetic testing out there to obtain a diagnosis and possibly treatment. Armed with this critical information and support, I help them to move forward.</p> <p>I am also certified by the National Lipid Association in clinical lipidology and am interested in applying genomics to enhance treatments via pharmacogenetics, which is the understanding of how our genes influence the way our bodies respond to drug therapies.</p> <p>In addition to working with patients and their families, I publish many articles on genetics and am involved with clinical research on pharmacogenetics.</p>
