Biography: Dr. Ashraf Reyad is a multi-organ transplant surgeon, dually board certified by The American Board of Surgery and The Intercollegiate Royal College of Surgeons.As a top 5th percentile graduate of The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Dr. Reyad was recognized and awarded for his performance in chemistry, medical informatics, anatomy, and neonatology. In 2011, he completed his preliminary surgical internship at The John Hopkins Hospital. He was awarded the esteemed Gersh Effron Resident of the Year Award for three consecutive years during his surgical residency training at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, which he completed in 2015. He was recognized for his dedicated teaching efforts with residents and medical students, in addition to his exemplary care of his patients. Dr. Reyad completed his abdominal transplant fellowship training at The John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.As a surgeon he was part of the first clinical trial successfully transplanting Hepatitis C positive kidneys into Hepatitis C negative patients known as the EXPANDER -1 trial. This work increases organ utilization and decreases organ discard, promoting transplantation and decreasing wait list times in the U.S. and internationally. The trial was published at the Annals of Internal Medicine and in Times Magazine in 2017.Dr. Reyad was part of the surgical team to perform the first HIV positive to HIV positive organs procurements and kidney transplants (the HOPE Act) in the U.S. and the first HIV positive to HIV positive liver transplant in the world. His expertise includes managing highly immuno-sensitized patients, ABO blood group incompatible transplants, hyper-coagulable patients, as well as the care of patients with multiple prior organ transplantations.He performed the first simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplants at Medical City Fort Worth in 2018. In 2018 under his medical directorship, the Medical City Fort Worth transplant program was ranked the best in the country for shortest transplant wait times and one year outcomes.Dr. Reyad also performs transplant related surgeries hand assisted laparoscopies, donor nephrectomies, simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplants, kidney transplants, pancreas transplants and access surgery (fistula creations and peritoneal dialysis catheter insertions).In addition, he is interested in all aspects of general surgery including robotic assisted cholecystectomies, hernia repairs and hepatobiliary surgeries.
