Nature of Complaint:
The physician in his care and treatment of a patient from 08-13-2004 to 01-02-2009, failed to properly manage, monitor, and treat the patient and failed to maintain accurate, complete, and legible records for this patient. The physician failed to properly manage the patient's diabetes mellitus, failed to treat the patient's hypertension, and failed to appropriately monitor and treat the patient's ongoing hypothyroidism diagnosis. The Special Conference Committee determined that the physican failed to appreciate the significance of scheduled, routine follow-ups in the treatment and management of chronic disease in the care of this patient.
The physician stated that he has now developed a system to improve patient compliance for follow-up appointments and has incorporated health maintenance information into every patient visit. The physician also advised that he has revised his refill policy and now requires patients to be seen on a regular basis in order to receive their medications. The physician also registered for a medical recordkeeping course.
The physician has been issued a Reprimand by the Virginia Board of Medicine. The physician's license shall be subject to the following:
- The physician within twelve months shall complete board approved continuing medical education in at least twelve hours in medical recordkeeping; at least ten hours each in managing diabetes and managing hypertension; and at least eight hours in physician-patient communication to include dealing with noncompliant patients and/or patient conflict.
December 14, 2010-Terms Terminated Letter
The physician has complied with the 02-03-2010 Order. The Virginia Board of Medicine has terminated the terms placed on the physician's license. The physician currently has a full and unrestricted license in the State of Virginia.
