What Is a Residency?
Residency is a medical training program that a doctor completes to gain expertise in a specialty. Residency training takes place in accredited hospitals or other healthcare facilities under the supervision of experienced doctors. Residency training lasts from three to seven years, and the exact duration varies from specialty to specialty. Residency is required for specialty board certification.

Nature of Complaint:
The physician committed repeated acts of negligence in his care and treatment of a patient. The physician in preparation for the patient's surgery reviewed his consultation dictation which indicated that the tumor was on the right adrenal gland. The physician also misinterpreted the CT film of the biopsy which indicated that the right adrenal gland was biopsied which the physician confirmed as a left[sided tumor despite the labeling on the film. The physician also failed to consult with a radiologist to review the CT scan. The physician performed a left adrenalectomy on the patient and incorrectly removed the patient's normal left adrenal gland instead of the right adrenal gland which contained the mass requiring an unplanned bilateral adrenalectomy. The patient is now on life-long medication for adrenal insufficiency due to the bilateral adrenalectomy. The physician also failed to maintain adequate and accurate records for this patient.
Action Taken:
The physician has been issued a Public Reprimand by the Medical Board of California and shall complete the following:
- The physician shall successfully complete all phases of a clinical training or educational program equivalent to the PACE Program offered at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine.
- The physician shall successfully complete a board approved medical recordkeeping course within 180 days.
