Learn more about Pediatric Cardiologists
A pediatric cardiologist specializes in caring for children with conditions and diseases of the heart and blood vessels. Pediatric cardiologists diagnose and treat many heart diseases and problems from the fetal period through adulthood, including cardiac arrhythmias and congenital heart disease. When heart surgery is needed, pediatric cardiologists work closely with specialized pediatric heart surgeons to provide comprehensive care. Pediatric cardiologists are also experts in preventing and treating risk factors for adult heart disease in children.
A pediatric cardiologist typically:
-
Evaluates a patient’s medical history and educates the child and family about heart health and heart disease prevention
-
Performs a physical exam including evaluation of blood pressure and vital signs, weight, and the health of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels
-
Orders and interprets laboratory and imaging tests and prescribes medications
-
Diagnoses and treats acute and chronic diseases and conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels, including arrhythmias and congenital heart disease
-
Screens, treats and monitors conditions known to increase the risk of adult heart disease in children, such as hypertension, smoking, obesity, and high cholesterol. For some complex risks, such as having diabetes, a pediatric cardiologist will provide referrals to other specialists such as a pediatric endocrinologist.
-
Performs procedures, such as EKG, echocardiogram, and cardiac catheterization
-
Works closely with your child’s primary care doctor and other specialists to provide optimal care

Biography: I care for children and adolescents who are born with or acquire heart disease, as well as pregnant mothers carrying fetuses who are suspected to have heart disease. My focus is diagnosing heart conditions by interpreting images of the heart, either by ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), prenatally and through adolescence. I was drawn to pediatric cardiology early in my training, when I had the opportunity to care for children with heart disease. I quickly grew passionate about caring for these children and learning to manage the complex varieties of heart conditions. I feel a strong responsibility for keeping kids safe and as healthy as they can be. What I like most about my job is working closely with my patients and their families. It is especially rewarding, as a fetal cardiologist, to meet the parents of my patients before they are born, and to build a strong collaboration that continues after birth and through childhood. In addition, I love to teach students and pediatricians-in-training so that they can gain the knowledge and experience they need to care for their patients. I also take part in research that focuses on assessing outcomes in children with different types of heart disease so that we can improve the quality and safety of care that our team provides. I am fortunate to be part of such an exceptional group at Columbia where our team of heart specialists, in partnership with our colleagues in other pediatric specialties, works tirelessly and compassionately to deliver the best care to our patients.

Care Philosophy: We will do everything we can to serve you promptly, thoroughly, and with the thoughtfulness and compassion that your child deserves.I joined the staff here at the Komansky Center for Children's Health at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center immediately after graduating from medical school in 1986, and have never left. As a parent, I understand the anxiety that accompanies any doctor visit, especially one for subspecialty evaluation of a potential problem. I know that where a child's care is concerned, there are no bad questions and no trivial worries. Feel free to ask away. I'll finish explaining sometime after you're tired of listening. Don't feel that you should leave until you are confident that you understand your child's condition -- even if, as is often the case, that condition is perfect cardiac health and that your questions and concerns have been addressed.
